''Beatrice Wood: Mama of Dada'' exhibition at the Flint Institute of Arts

Beatrice Wood was an American artist and studio potter, who late in life was dubbed the "Mama of Dada" because of her involvement with the early 20th century art movement in New York. Born to wealthy socialites, Wood, despite her parents' strong opposition, insisted on pursuing a career in the arts. Eventually her parents agreed to let her study painting and acting in Paris. At the onset of World War I, Wood was forced to return to the U.S., settling in New York. During this period, she was introduced to Marcel Duchamp, who brought her into the world of Dada. Duchamp was impressed by her work, arranging to have it published and inviting her to work in his studio. It was here that she developed her style of spontaneous sketching and painting that continued throughout her life. Wood died in 1998 at age 105.
