On-Call Substitute Librarian

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt/Non-Union
Salary: On-Call Librarian (with MLS/MLIS or equivalent degree) - $20 per hour. No benefits.

 
Summary: Under the general supervision of the Manager and Director teams, welcome and assist patrons and visitors in the use of the library by providing excellent customer service and connecting patrons with the appropriate resources to meet their education, information, and recreational needs. This position will require flexibility in scheduling and adaptability to fulfill the needs of the library during staff absences, and outreach and programming commitments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work directly with patrons of all ages at public service desks that include circulation, information services, and digital.
  • Provides reference, readers’ advisory and/or information services to patrons of all ages.
  • Assist patrons with various forms of technology.
  • Assist patrons with accessing library resources including and not limited to public computers, room reservations, digital resources, and accessing online and physical materials.
  • Helps manage library materials collection.
  • Takes initiative to consistently update skills to effectively assist patrons.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and requested.
 
Minimum qualifications:
  • Possession of Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. LIS/IS students will be considered.
  • Two years of customer service, library, education, or teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated technology skills to effectively utilize and assist patrons with digital needs.
  • Possess flexibility and adaptability with scheduling needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate curiosity in learning all that the library has to offer.
  • Ability to perform working with minimal supervision and comfort to exercise high quality judgement to determine work methods and results.
  • Reliable transportation and attendance.
  • Ability to successfully interact with people of different social, economic, language, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to successfully work with external and internal customers in a kind, friendly, and cooperative manner.
  • Ability to pass a background check after offer has been extended.
  • Ability to speak language in addition to fluent English (Preferred).
 
Working Conditions:
  • Generally, will work within a normal office environment, with minimal discomfort due to extreme temperatures, dust, and noise though there may be some outdoor work in temperate weather.
  • Work hours may be varied, including day, evenings, and weekend hours.
  • Frequent sitting/standing in one position for extended periods of time.
  • Walking to rove the library to assist patrons.
